Cereal, Baby!

May 18, 2008 in Blake, Michigan - 3 Comments
We were going to wait until Blake was 6 months to try cereal with him (he is 5 1/2 mos. now), but we decided it would be fun to try it in Michigan amidst eager grandparents.
His first bite was very anti-climatic. He slurped, swallowed, and opened his mouth for more as if he had been eating cereal all along.

Yummmmm!

I set down the bowl for a second and Blake managed to get a foot right in the bowl. I guess he was done eating.

There goes the other foot. I fear that years of messes have begun.

Not that it is the case with everybody but my pediatrician advises to start around 4 months with cereal just to give the baby good practice then by 6 months they can start with actual baby food!Oh what fun that must have been. The pictures of it are just priceless. Its so great to capture the facial expression a baby surprisingly getting fed with a spoon!

You can start cereal at 4 months but babies can get all the nutrients they need from breastfeeding or formula until they are 6 months old and even beyond. We decided to wait on the cereal since Blake was doing so well with breastfeeding and was growing just fine. It is a fun new thing to start, but at the same time, once you start, you can’t go back! Our pediatrician also thought Blake might be more prone to allergies which is another reason why we waited longer. He seems to be enjoying the cereal now though, and we are hoping (or I am hoping) that it’ll help him sleep longer at night!

wow!! he likes it!! that’s great–hopefully you’ll have a good eater on your hands. Quinn hated baby cereal–or any baby food for that matter. she ate big people food just fine though, so we skipped right over the mushy stuff! I love the pictures–so cute.
